Cambridgeshire families to get 40-home boost as new developments under way

Construction has started on 40 new affordable homes for local families in a Fenland market town, with a former Highways depot vacant for 21 years making way for some of the homes.

Flagship Homes, part of Bromford Flagship, has started on two sites in March in Cambridgeshire. Sitting either side of the playing field next to Cambridgeshire County Council’s office at Hereward Hall, the site closest to the hall will have 19 homes with 21 on the nearby Queen Street, where demolition is under way on the unused Highways depot buildings.

Northampton-based construction firm Snowdon Construction is the project’s principal contractor, which has also been part-funded by Homes England.

Simon Floor, Flagship Homes Delivery Project Manager, said: “I’m really looking forward to working with Snowdon Homes to build these much-needed properties in March.

“We can’t wait for Bromford Flagship’s customers to create their homes and make a safe and welcoming community here.”

Buildings at the disused former Highways Depot in March, which has been closed since 1996, will be demolished to make way for 21 affordable homes

A total of 27 affordable rent homes will be allocated to families on the local council waiting list, to be let at around 80% of market rate and managed by Bromford Flagship housing association Samphire Homes.

The remaining 13 will be for shared ownership, a hybrid between buying and renting which makes it easier to get onto the housing ladder. All the homes will be finished with an energy efficiency rating of EPC B, and will come with air source heat pumps and EV chargers.

Chris Jackson, Snowdon Homes’ Construction Director, said: “We’re already making great progress on site, and we’re really pleased to be working with Flagship Homes on these 40 affordable homes.

“We’re looking forward to seeing families move in, knowing that these homes will be a big part of the lives they build here.”

Families will begin moving into the new homes in late 2026, with overall completion on the sites estimated for summer 2027.
